Timothy Roberts built a home here. Growth was slow until the 19th century, when the town developed as a Textile center. Rochester has a historical society, and a museum housed in the public library. It was incorporated as a city in 891 and has a mayor-council form of governnt, with the mayor elected directly by the ople. Pop. (1960) 15,927.
The town was one of those raided by the Indian chief. King Philip, son of Massasoit, in his war with the colonists (1675). His council lodge occupied a field now within the town. Still standing is the first frame house in the community, built by the Thatcher family in 1703 as quarters for the slaves who cut the logs for their sawmill. The town was settled in 1673. Originally a part of Abington, it was incorporated as a separate town in 1874. Pop. 13,119.
ROANOKE, town, Alabama, in Randolph County; altitude 800 feet; located 80 miles from Atlanta, Ga.; and served by the Central of Georgia, and Atlantic Coast Line railroads. The town is an agricultural community. Industries include the manufacture of cotton clothing, lumber, beverages, fabrics, and fertilizer. Settled in 1835, the town was incorporated in 1887. Government is by a mayor and council. Pop. 5,288.
