Air Cultivation Restricted: Only the nation, and that only in time of crisis, can elicit equal devotion. Confidence and trust, self-sacrifice, and even friendship are usually restricted to the circle of one's family. Among Greeks who are not kinsmen, social obligations tend to be negative and marked by distrust. Cultivation of land or the running of a business tends to be a family enterprise because it allows men to pool their resources while sparing part in the country's economy.
Melons and grapes are susceptible to damage by frost so their open air cultivation restricted cultivation is restricted mainly to warm-temperate and subtropical climates.
Temperate fruit trees are nearly all deciduous. Most can resist temperatures of below — 7°C (20°F) during winter dormancy and many cannot grow in tropical or subtropical climates because prolonged exposure to low temperatures in the winter is necessary for normal development.
Cultivation. Cultivation is an ancient vineyard practice. It destroys weeds and facilitates other vineyard operations such as irrigation. Contrary to common belief, cultivation does not conserve soil moisture; however, the resulting destruction of weeds does conserve moisture. Discs or chisel-tooth cultivators are used, although some vineyards are still plowed. Heavy disc harrows are used to turn under weeds and cover crops. Weeds have been and are sometimes controlled with oil sprays or chemicals, usually diuron or monuron.
