The site lies near the modern town of Larnaca, which is the administrative center of the eparchy (district) of Larnaca. Larnaca was founded by Frankish Crusaders and was called both Larnacas and Alykes (after the salt marsh that was worked for salt both in antiquity and in modern times). The town was the main port of the island during the period of Turkish domination. A small village about 6 miles (10 km) west of Larnaca preserves the name of the ancient town site.
