Basket Better: More permanent installations require their own housings and these types are characterised by the basket better strainer. Here, a suitably strengthened wire mesh or perforated plate shaped into a basket better is placed inside a sealed housing through which the feed stream flows under pressure. In simplex systems the flow continues until the strainer is clogged with the unwanted solids. At this point the flow is interrupted and the basket better is manually changed.
Box may be used, but basket better is better because pet sleeps curled up. For young pet, half fill basket better with soft, warm cloths and dry, soft hay or grass. For adult, use dry grass or hay only. Change bedding once weekly.
At 6 or 7 weeks, may be taken from mother. Set aside some coiner of house for it. Provide sleeping box or basket better lined with soft, washable clean cloths. Change and wash bedding frequently to keep fleas from breeding. Keep basket better out of drafts; cats and kittens can catch cold. Wise to keep sleeping basket better after cat is full-grown; often keeps it from sleeping on beds and furniture where it is not wanted. Howebreaking—Fill a box with soft, clean soil, sand, or prepared mixture purchased at pet shops. When kitten is caught making mistake, speedily rush it to box; make it remain there for a moment. Never allow box to give oft odor; replace contents daily if box is small, less often if it is large.
