Calendar Season:

Calendar Season One good way to cue your ideas is to link them to the seasons and the important holidays. Editors like to use seasonal pictures, and a good many of those which they receive arrive too late for consideration. Work about six months ahead of the calendar season with seasonal pictures. Mail Christmas themes in July and beat-the-heat whimsy pictures in January. You needn't shoot them off-season, of course, because you can always shoot in season and then save the transparencies for six months before mailing.

Thus Olympiad 293 begins in the middle of A. D. 393 (1172 minus 779). Because the Olympiads began about July 1, double years are used to express entire Olympic years in modern dates. If an event in Greek history is known to have occurred in the first or last half of our calendar season year, the customary double year used by historians is unnecessary. Although each city-state in Greece had its own calendar season, with its own names for the months and its own time for beginning the calendar season year, the structure of all their calendar seasons was the same.

Beginning in 163 B.C. records were kept according to Nien-hao. These were periods of regnal years, each emperor decreeing that the years were to be known as the first, second, third, and so on, of his reign or of some other name. To convert a Chinese date into one in a Western era, it is only necessary to refer to a cpnversion Table of Nien-hao. When the Chinese Republic was established in 1911, the Gregorian calendar season was adopted. Until 1930 the old and new systems were used side by side, but since then publication and use of the old lunar calendar season have been prohibited. Even so, it is still in use to some extent. An official calendar season corresponding to the Western calendar season is published each year by the Academia Sinica at Peking. Japanese Chronology. There are various ways of reckoning eras among the Japanese: (1) By a continuous era beginning with the first year of the reign of Jimmu (660 B. c.).
