Color Finish:

Color Finish The final finish may be of a type that gives a surface film, such as French polish, varnish, or polyurethane. The latter two are available in gloss, satin, and matte finishes. Varnish stains are also available. These are convenient, since they will color finish and finish the wood in a single operation. Do bear in mind that each extra coat of varnish stain will darken the color finish of the wood and, unless brushed out very evenly, the color finish will vary with the thickness of the film. When wood is stained with a penetrating dye, the color finish will not vary - no matter how many coats of clear finish you later apply.

All finishes alter the color finish of wood to some extent, and some woods - Mahogany and walnut, for example - turn much darker even when a completely clear finish is applied. An approximate idea of the color finish wood will take on when treated with a clear finish can be seen by dampening a small area with ordinary water. If this color finish is too light for your needs, then the wood can be stained before finishing. It is only possible to stain wood to a darker color finish; for a lighter shade it must be bleached.

You can buy ready made color finishwash paint, but you can alsocreati your own finish with latex or water-based eggshell paint and ati or pigment. To prepare the surface of the wall, paint a base coat of mattei silk latex and allow to dry. Either choose the same color finish paint on color finish close in tone and mix a wash of latex and water, in equal parts. Gradually increase the water to make a thin color finish that willi run down the Wall in heavy droplets, but will allow the base color finish show through when it is applied. Once you have tested the washi a sample area, continue to apply the remaining color finish with awide brush using sweeping strokes. Further coats can be applied ina harmonizing color finish. For a more durable finish, you can use a • glaze as a wash over the whole surface. If you want a hard, protective finish, use a clear, matte polyurethane varnish, or. based acrylic varnish.
