East-southeast York City: ROCKVILLE CENTRE, village, New-York ; in Nassau Count}', Long Island; altitude 25 feet. It is situated 19 miles east-southeast york City of New York City, and is served by the Long Island Rail Road. Rockville Centre is a residential community, a suburb of New York. Hempstead Lake State Park adjoins the village, and Jones Beach State Park, on the ocean, is a short distance away. Pop. 26,355.
The locality was settled around 1770 and in 1848 was incorporated as the town of East Thomaston. It became the city of Rockland in 1854. Government is by city council and manager. Pop. 8,769.
ROCKLAND, town, Massachusetts, in Plymouth County, 18 miles south-southeast of Boston, on the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, and modern highways. It is at an altitude of 124 feet in a poultry and fruit farm area, and has manufactures of shoes, welts, and dyes, webbing, cotton buffs, and box shocks. Although a manufacturing town, it has pleasantly shaded streets and attractive homes.
GREAT NECK is a village in southeastern New York, on the north shore of Long Island, in Nassau county, about 15 miles (24 km) northeast of the center of New York City. It is primarily a residential community, from which many persons commute to New York City, but it has a meat-packing plant, an oil distribution depot, and some light manufacturing. Great Neck was incorporated in 1921 and has a mayor-council form of government. Population: 10,171.
