Fueling Techniques:

Fueling Techniques Fueling Precautions Certain precautions must be carefully and completely observed every time a Boat is fueled with gasoline. Step by step, these are: BEFORE FUELING 1. Fuel before dark whenever possible. Make sure that the Boat is securely made fast to the fueling pier. 2. Stop engines, motors, fans, and other devices capable of producing a spark. Open the master switch if the electrical system has one. Put out all cigarettes, galley fires, and open flames. 3. Close all ports, windows, doors, and hatches so that fumes cannot blow on board and below. 4. Make sure all passengers and any crewmembers not needed for the fueling operation disembark before you begin fueling. 5. Prohibit all smoking on board and in the vicinity. 6. Have a fire extinguisher close at hand. 7. Measure the fuel in the tanks and do not order more than the tank will hold. Allow for expansion. 8. When fueling a Boat with an outboard motor, remove any portable tanks and fill them on shore.

The best action, however, is to prevent fires and explosions from ever occurring. Be alert for any leaks in your fuel tanks and lines; use proper fueling techniques. If you use a flammable fuel for cooking, make sure that your system meets all safety standards and check frequently for leaks.
