If your pictures are good enough and your coverage sufficiently comprehensive, some of the editors in the city which you serve will offer you deals to provide them exclusive service. Should you wish to accept such a deal, make sure that you retain the right to sell your pictures to noncompeting newspapers in other cities. Such outside sales of pictures can add materially to your income. For a list of possible buyers of your work, consult the newspapers listing in Where and How to Sell Your Pictures, by Arvel W. When a newspaper reporter is taken off a news beat and made feature writer a feature writer, he is considered to have landed a highly desirable promotion, for a number of good reasons. In the first place, he has been singled out for feature work because he has given evidence of superior writing ability. Further, his work becomes more interesting, more challenging to his skill, his duties more varied from day to day. He has the opportunity to do a type of writing which may lead him into the higher paying magazine field.
All of these advantages accrue just as directly, if not more so, to the photographer who advances from spot news coverage to the production of feature pictures. This is true for the freelance as well as for the staff photographer.
