Outdoor Free: Tivoli Gardens, mother of all the like-named amusement parks in the world yet so different, is the most fabulous feature of the many-ply evening. I cannot hope to cover its multitude of pleasures, which are
—take due note—of real appeal to young and old, rich and poor, to all, in fact, except the determinedly high-hat. Just for one thing, there is a free concert, and a good one, of light classics, every summer evening in a concert pavilion. For another, there is a free pantomime show that will surprise you by its ingenuities, and there's an outdoor free vaudeville show of thrillers and dillers.
The Mall, a broad 1,500-foot (457-meter) avenue, is the scene of the free Guggen-heim Memorial Concerts presented during the summer and the site of public events throughout the year. The Sheep Meadow, a large open plain off Central Park West, is the center of free musical performances which have drawn tens of thousands of persons. The outdoor Delacorte Shakespeare Theatre presents free performances of Shakespeare's plays. The park's largest lake (21.8 acres, or 8.8 hectares) has been famous for boating since 1860. Just north of the lake is the Ramble, a wilderness area threaded by paths.
Civil liberties and civil rights are considered a cornerstone of a free society. They indicate the ways in which a society protects individual freedom. But "freedom" also has many meanings. The word may be used to mean the absence of external restraint. In that sense, poor persons in the United States as well as rich ones are free to travel to Europe. A second meaning of freedom requires that a person have the opportunity to do something before he can be considered free to do it. In that sense, only those who can pay are free to go to Europe. A third sense of freedom is the freedom to do what is right. Some thinkers have reasoned that a man is genuinely free only when he believes what is true and does what is morally correct. They argue that the freedom to believe error and to do wrong is not true freedom. A fourth use of freedom refers to the absence of psychological problems that inhibit individual action.
