Outside Town Proper: As is true of most great battles, Gettysburg was a series of engagements rather than a single gigantic struggle. During the first day, July 1, fighting raged just outside town proper the town proper, to the north and west, with the result that Union troops after a desperate engagement retreated through the town to a ridge on Gettysburg's southern outskirts, running roughly north-south, where lay the town's cemetery. Cemetery Ridge became the bastion of Union defense, and it was on its high ground that the various divisions and corps of the Union army, pouring toward the vicinity of Gettysburg from several directions, assembled themselves.
Voters must be United States citizens, at least . years of age, and residents of the state for le year and of the town for six months, and ey must also be registered in the town. No one ay vote on town financial matters unless he vns real estate in the town to the value of $134 has paid a property tax of at least $134 within e preceding year.

The Cambridge Camden Society was formed in 1839 to advise prospective church builders on the proper liturgical disposition of the church and its furnishings. Its periodical, the Ecclesiologist, dispensed advice on matters pertaining to the sanctity of the chancel and the necessity of separating it from the space for the laity; the proper placement of the altar, the lectern, and the pulpit; and proper orientation, although this last point was not always followed.
