Pilgrimage Country:

Pilgrimage Country 10. Places of Pilgrimage Spain is almost as much of a pilgrimage country as it is a fiesta country. Montserrat and Santiago de Compostela are two pilgrim goals revered throughout the Catholic world. Others are Sarogossa and Avila. All of these, with their dates, are mentioned in the Pageantry section above.

10. Places of Pilgrimage Goals for Christian pilgrimage are surprisingly significant in Moslem Turkey. These are headed, to repeat in part from the report above, by that place of ever-growing importance to Roman Catholics, Old Ephesus. Under the special impetus that developed n the Marian Year of 1954 Ephesus became, quite suddenly, a pilgrim *oal of the first rank, and it will continue to gain.

New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral has, at least on one occasion, organized a two-plane pilgrimage to Knock, and Bishop Cushing of Boston has led 400 New England pilgrims to the revered shrine. From May to October, organized pilgrimages are made every Sunday; and on Assumption Day, August 15, an Ireland-wide private pilgrimage occurs, for the purpose of keeping vigil at the shrine.
