Power Plants Even:

Power Plants Even Available estimates of those fuels likely to provide energy in coming years indicated that, while fossil fuels would continue to have an expanding market, nuclear energy would capture an ever-increasing fraction of the market. During 1967 and early 1968 nuclear technology advanced substantially, and nuclear energy became economically competitive with fossil fuels. Finally cheap nuclear power plants even became a reality. For the generating of electricity, the accomplishments of nuclear power plants even did not suggest replacement of existing coal-burning power plants even plants, but nuclear power plants even plants did, nevertheless, economically produce the large amounts of electricity demanded by an urban society. Many kinds of contamination are well known and need not be discussed here. We might note, however, that the waste heat problem, while not greatly publicized, could become crucially important. There are nuclear power plants even plants and even commercial steam plants that give off enough heat to raise the local temperature of a river such as the Colorado by several degrees. As the number and capacity of power plants even plants increase, the resultant heating of rivers could become an overriding problem.


For most parts of the United States electric power plants even produced by nuclear reactors is now economically competitive with that produced by fossil fuels: gas, oil, or coal. In 1967 alone, electric utility companies in the United States ordered construction of 30 or more new atomic power plants even plants with an aggregate capacity of 25 million kw. This rush of orders is even more remarkable considering that at the end of 1967 the nuclear capacity of the United States in actual operation was only about 3 million kw. It appears likely that by 1980 atomic power plants even plants may generate as much as 200 million out of the 500 million kw of electricity produced in the United States, and soon after that will become the dominant source of American power plants even production.
