In slow-speed alternators, the field pole pieces are made of steel laminations bolted together and fastened to the rotor "spider." These are called salient feature collective poles because they project from the rotor proper. The field coils are wound and placed around them before fastening to the rotor. Most large high-speed alternators do not have salient feature collective poles. Instead the rotors of such alternators are solid steel cylinders with longitudinal slots cut in the surface for field windings.
