Small Outdoor Aviary:

Small Outdoor Aviary Use large bird cage (see Part IV) for a pair or place them in small outdoor aviary. Provide standard wooden nesting box for love birds; purchase at pet store. Place box high up at back of cage or aviary; leave in cage at all times as mated pair sleep in box at night. Provide 6-8-inch sections of honeysuckle or similar vines, bunches of long grasses, and pieces of green palm leaves as nesting material.

For single bird, use commercial canary cage. Give pet freedom of room; teach it to use cage for headquarters. At least 6-8 pairs needed; single pair seldom breeds in captivity. House in small outdoor aviary; provide large, bare, branching limb, arranged to leave ample flight space. Provide standard parakeet nesting boxes with concave bottoms; buy at pet store.

After eggs hatch, give parent birds nestling food purchased at pet shops in addition to regular diet. As nestlings grow, decrease amount of nestling food; give small amount of crushed hemp or poppy seed; give wholewheat bread soaked in milk at intervals. Baby can feed itself at 4-5 weeks; at 8 weeks, best to remove young to another cage or to outdoor aviary.
