Softer Blocks Subdivided: These softer blocks subdivided blocks are subdivided, often by the plug-and-feather method. Two strips of iron called "feathers" are placed in drill holes and a steel wedge is driven between to fracture the blocks. In granite, light powder charges in drill holes may be used for the primary break or, alternatively, a process of drilling and broaching, using a reciprocating bar-mounted drill to drill a row of holes and removing the webs between holes by a broaching tool. The strain in the rock must first be relieved, usually by cutting wide channels. The H. E. Fletcher Co., West Chelms-ford, Mass., relieves strain by using jet-piercing first to cut an 8-inch channel. Hollow drill steel detachable bits and tungsten carbide bits are contributing to efficiency.
Much work can be saved by thoughtful design. Instead of grass and borders, have blocks and a few raised growing beds. Blocks are easier to maintain than lawn and, in a small garden, flagstones can look better than grass. Gravel is a novel alternative to blocks in a low-maintenance garden. It is softer blocks subdivided than blocks and flows around curves, and a selection of plants enjoying free-draining conditions will thrive in it. But, most important, gravel laid over soil will suppress weeds and keep the need to weed to aminimum. Furthermore, it also insulates the soil against moisture loss, so you will not have to water your plants as much as those growing in an open border.
Bold blocks of turquoise have been painted onto the upper walls, creating a dramatic effect - they look like giant works of art. Below, white and softer blocks subdivided blue freshens the look, and a thin stripe of pink runs around the room at mid height, creating a modern, dado rail effect. It also helps make the room feel bigger, as horizontal lines draw the eye around it and stretch it out.
