Timetable Fall Lawn: A good timetable fall lawn for fall lawn making is: early August, mix in organic matter, cinders, sand and clay according to needs of soil. One week later incorporate lime and arsenate of lead if needed, and a week after that mix in synthetic soil conditioner if you are using it. Late August or early September mix in fertilizer. Mid-September sow grass.
If the lawn is to be completed in spring mix in organic matter, cinders, sand and clay, according to needs, as early as possible, preferably the fall before and lime, if needed, a week later. Mix in arsenate of lead, if needed, two to three weeks before sowing or planting, fertilizer a week later. If a synthetic soil conditioner is to be used mix it in just before sowing or planting.
Each year thousands of homeowners, either from ignorance of the fact that fall is the best lawn making season, or because of a determination to get their lawn started in the spring in spite of that, begin then. If you intend to make a new lawn in spring above all else get started early. The earlier you start the more likely your lawn is to succeed and the less work you will have in establishing it. By early I mean as soon as the ground is dry enough to work and well before the last frost. Under no circumstances, however, walk upon your soil and work it when it is a wet condition.
Sod is lawn grass that has been seeded, cut loose from the soil and rolled or stacked. About 3/iin of soil is attached. It achieves an instant lawn and prevents erosion on slopes.
Prepare the site as for seed; early fall and spring are the best times for laying. Apply a lawn fertilizer before laying and rake it in.
