Welded Construction:

Welded Construction The requirements of the Rules apply to steel vessels of all welded construction. Riveted construction, where used, is to comply with the applicable parts dealing with riveting in the 1969 edition of the Rules.

Furnace-welded Pipe For Grade 1 furnace-welded pipe, the test section is not to be less than 100 mm (4 in.) in length and the weld is to be located 45 degrees from the line of direction of the applied force. The test is to be made in three steps.

Thus, in a large welded tanker, the seam of the plating just above the turn of the bilge and the attachment of the uppermost strake of plating to the angle forming the corner of the deck and side shell will be riveted to permit the vessel to bend or work freely. Besides saving weight, welding also offers considerable saving of time during construction.
