Wood- Blocks: If you lay rectangular or hexagonal wood- blocks, you will need half-sizes for the perimeter. Some manufacturers produce half-size wood- blocks, but you may have to cut others to fit, using a heavy hammer and bolster chisel. Measure the offcut, and score the line with the chisel using a straight-edged length of wood as a guide. Then, resting the block on the length of wood, chop sharply with the hammer and chisel to break along the line.
Lay all the whole wood- blocks first, then cut and fit the ones for the edges.
A large area of paving wood- blocks likely to receive considerable traffic should be bedded on mortar on a prepared foundation. Start to lay the wood- blocks in one corner of the patio and work diagonally across the surface. This makes it easier to ensure that they are laid consistently flat. Place i/zin thick offcuts of wood between the wood- blocks as consistent joint spaces, or simply butt up the wood- blocks for finer joints. As you work across the surface, kneel on a piece of board to distribute your weight.
The reason that photography had such little impact on the pictorial press was largely technological, but also stylistic. The reading public had become used to wood engravings, and the editors saw no reason to change a group journalistic system that was successful. The letterpress was set in type in a traditional way, and the wood engravings, which were in relief and on wood- blocks exactly type high, were locked in forms with the type. Until the 1880s there was no photomechanical process to provide relief wood- blocks that could be printed with the type on highspeed magazine presses, even though from the very birth of photography many experiments were made to reproduce the photographic image in ink.
