York Hastings: HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, ha'stingz, is a village in southeastern New York state, in Westchester county, on the Hudson River, about 18 miles (29 km) north of the center of New York City. It is principally a residential community but also manufactures copper wire and cables.
Carrere & Hastings helped promote the revival of Renaissance styles that Charles F. McKim and others had started in the late 1870's. The work of the firm was frequently French Renaissance, but Hastings expanded his architectural vocabulary after 1911 to include classical styles.
The General Theological Seminary, New York HASTINGS, ha'stingz, Thomas (1860-1929), American architect, who advocated a return to Renaissance styles of architecture. He was born in New York City on March 11, 1860. After attending Columbia College briefly, he went to the ficole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, from which he graduated in 1884. Returning to New York City, he went to work for the architectural firm of Mc-Kim, Mead & White. In 1886 he formed a partnership with John M. Carrere (q.v.) that lasted until Carrere's death in 1911.
