I New York State he was appointed chairman o the Temporary State Commission on the Cor stitutional Convention in 1956, and in 1958 chaii man of a Special Legislative Committee to revis the constitution. He was elected governor c New York in 1958 and was reelected in 1962 an 1966. Regarded as a liberal, he was a prominei contender for the party's presidential nominatio in 1960, 1964, and 1968. During his administn tion tax increases improved the state's financi; position, state aid to education was increase and a medical assistance program was enactei Meanwhile, Rockefeller was active in famil enterprises.
He was graduated at Hamilton College in 1864, and at the New York University Law School in 1867. In the latter year he was admitted to the bar and entered upon the practice of his profession in New York. In 1883 he was appointed United States District Attorney for the southern district of New York; in 1894 was a delegate-at-large to the New York State Constitutional Convention, and was chairman of the judiciary committee.
